La collection CHINA SERIES comporte une quinzaine de « variations » qui correspondent à des œuvres autonomes de différents formats et durées. Proposées sous la forme de compilations pour plusieurs types d’espaces, la place que public peut occuper varie en fonction de chaque disposition scénique. Ces variations ont la spécificité d’être pensées comme un ensemble modulaire : aucune n’est considérée comme étant en cours de création ou achevée, mais au contraire susceptible d’évoluer.
À partir des principes de reconstruction, Julian Vogel substitue des objets en céramique et en porcelaine aux coupoles coniques en plastique qui composent de nos jours la plupart des diabolos manufacturés et commercialisés. D’un côté, il étudie ces matériaux en prêtant attention à leurs qualités d’anima- tion et de responsivité au regard d’actions spécifiques : assemblage, suspension, roulement, giration, casse, recollage. De l’autre, il s’agit pour lui de partager et mettre en valeur ces qualités à l’aide de différents dispositifs dans lesquels le diabolo reste une des raisons d’être.
Par la fabrication de nouveaux équipements, de nouveaux attachements se manifestent à travers une écriture élargie à d’autres formes de vie non humaines qui réclament, ou du moins méritent aussi notre attention. Dès lors, le temps et l’espace accueillent des turbulences qui enveloppent, traversent et affectent les corps de l’interprète et du public, accompagnées d’autres éléments aux modes et cycles d’existence hétérogènes.
CHINA SERIES explores and shows various forms of diabolo, which is quite a simple apparatus - two bowls connected by an axis. It is an interdisciplinary art project between contemporary circus, dance, performance and sculpture. The diabolo bowls – usually made from rubber – are replaced by ceramic and porcelain objects. They roll, turn, fly and break. The starting point is the perpetual motion, the constant transition and transformation of objects. The fragility of objects – but also of the human body – reminds us of the temporality of our being.
With CHINA SERIES, the Swiss artist Julian Vogel presents a modular project, which consists of several variations. These variations are performances, installations, videos, sculptures and publications, which can be presented in various combinations. The different formats interact with the surroundings and the visitors and create surprising and new frames for experience.
CHINA SERIES erforscht und zeigt verschiedene Formen des Diabolos. Im Grunde ein simples Objekt: Zwei Schalen, verbunden durch eine Achse. Es ist ein interdisziplinäres Kunstprojekt zwischen zeitgenössischem Zirkus, Tanz, Performance und Skulptur. Die Schalen – üblicherweise aus Gummi – werden durch Keramik- und Porzellanobjekte ersetzt. Sie rollen, drehen, fliegen und zerbrechen. Im Zentrum stehen die ständige Veränderung und Bewegung von Dingen sowie die Transformation des Objekts. Die Zerbrechlichkeit von Objekten – aber auch des menschlichen Körpers – erinnert uns an die Zeitlichkeit des Seins.
Mit CHINA SERIES präsentiert der Schweizer Künstler Julian Vogel ein modulares Projekt, bestehend aus mehreren Variationen, die in unterschiedlichen Kombinationen gezeigt werden können. Die verschiedenen Formate interagieren mit der Umgebung und den Besuchenden und schaffen ungewöhnliche Räume der Erfahrung.
CHINA SERIES esplora e mostra diverse forme di diabolo. Si tratta di un oggetto semplice: due conchiglie collegate da un asse. È un progetto artistico interdisciplinare tra circo contemporaneo, danza, performance e scultura. Le conchiglie, solitamente in gomma, sono sostituite da oggetti in ceramica e porcellana. Rotolano, girano, volano e si rompono. L'attenzione si concentra sul costante cambiamento e movimento delle cose e sulla trasformazione dell'oggetto. La fragilità degli oggetti - ma anche del corpo umano - ci ricorda la temporalità dell'essere.
Con CHINA SERIES, l'artista svizzero Julian Vogel presenta un progetto modulare composto da diverse varianti che possono essere esposte in diverse combinazioni. I diversi formati interagiscono con l'ambiente circostante e con i visitatori, creando spazi di esperienza insoliti.

En partie absurde et dénué de sens, mais il est aussi fascinant, beau et toujours surprenant, car des choses que l'on croyait impossibles deviennent soudain possibles. C'est une référence contemporaine au cirque traditionnel et à sa grande qualité de rendre possible ce qui semble impossible, de créer des illusions dans lesquelles des mondes naissent.

It is a glimpse into a universe, into a very personal world. Created and activated by Julian Vogel. Partly absurd and senseless, yet it is also fascinating, beautiful and always surprising, because suddenly things become possible that one thought were impossible. It is a contemporary reference to traditional circus and its great quality of making the seemingly impossible possible, of creating illusions in which worlds are created.

Es ist ein Einblick in ein Universum, in eine ganz persönliche Welt. Von Julian Vogel kreiert und aktiviert. Teilweise absurd und sinnlos, aber sie ist eben auch faszinierend, schön und immer wieder überraschend, denn plötzlich sind Dinge möglich, die man für unmöglich hielt. Es ist eine zeitgenössische Referenz zum herkömmlichen Zirkus und seiner grossen Qualität, scheinbar Unmögliches möglich zu machen, Illusionen zu schaffen, worin Welten entstehen.
